Whats on my bulletin board..this week

Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers.
But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers. Psalm 1
....

The verse on my bulletin board is what I'm desperately trying to teach my children.
Meditate on God's law.
Go for counsel when you're in doubt about something.
Even when you're not in doubt go and seek it out.
Get them used to asking, "Dad, do you think I should do this?"
Good counsel is always a gift from God, it's not always what
you want to hear but it's a protection from the Lord.
So many times kids are not taught to seek out counsel.
Just do what you think or what you feel.
Our hearts can't be trusted and when you learn
to always run to counsel it will save lots of heart ache. Part of the heart ache
I'm trying to protect my children from is the heart ache of a prideful spirit.
The spirit of I'm right your wrong. When you're married this is not a quality that is
appreciated. So going to someone and saying,
"this is what I think, but I want your advice" can protect you from
the dangers of prideful thinking.
a haughty know it all is really hard to be around..sigh, I've been guilty.

Get your daughter used to asking her dad if he likes
what she has on.
Teach your son to always go to dad before
he does anything...I will ask Cooper, my eight
year old, did you get counsel before you did that?

Use the word counsel and tell them what it means.
Read stories about people or couples who went for counsel.
It starts early and remind them often.
Remind yourself often.
Don't do anything without first saying,
"I'll ask my husband and get back with you."

Counsel is a beautiful thing.

I love this. And it is timely in my life right now.
That verse is a verse I pray for Rob...
And I love your "mama" bread post! I would love to get started making bread, but I'm afraid! ;) It seems overwhelming! I think I would kill my starter before it even left the flour sack.
Maybe I'll muster up the courage to give it a try.
I know it sounds crazy that a woman who would travel across the world to bring her children home would be scared of making bread. But that's me. :)

A great post, with much insight.

However ... right now we have several young adults that we are encouraging to "be an adult" ... "learn how to make your own decisions" ... because there are other adults in their lives who are trying to make their decisions for them.

My husband and I are blessed that our 6 young adult children come to us for "councel" often. We want to speak into their lives. We want to mentor them. Yet, at the same time, we want them to know how to hear from God themselves, and we want them to be strong enough in their own convictions that they will act upon those convictions and not just settle for "mommy told me to _____".

It's a very fine line to walk. I'm processing and pondering a post to write this week about just this topic.

Be BLESSED!

Mama D

How are our children to be taught to "hear from God" if not thru our counsel? How are they to be taught to respect authority if not thru our teaching, correction, and discipline?

I'm happy that your 6 young adult children are taking counsel from you and their father.

It reads as if some of your children are taking counsel just not from their parents anymore. If that is so then I pray that they are receiving Biblical counsel like what is posted on Robins bulletin board.

Blessings

So true......I have begun doing this with Lottie and Emma. I find that I am a much better Mom this second time around than the 1st;) I heard Emma tell a friend the other day, "Do you think that your words make God smile?" lol She is listening!

How ironic! My 6yo, 4yo, and I are learning this Psalm. We don't have a chalkboard, but we do have paper and wall space to tack it on. I am realizing that I never really learned or studied in depth this Psalm. Thank you for your words, I will ponder them and hope it will spill on to my life and my children's lives.

I would love it if you would expound on the thought that "our hearts can't be trusted".

Don't you think that sometimes the Lord speaks to our hearts, and that we can learn to hear Him in our hearts.

Or that the passions, dreams, and desires of our hearts may come from the Lord? That he speaks through those passions, dreams, and desires?

Just pondering a lot this evening. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"
~Jeremiah 17:9

This is why counsel is so important.

Also, here are Wesleys words:

The heart - There is nothing so false and deceitful as the heart of man; deceitful in its apprehensions of things, in the hopes and promises which it nourishes, in the assurances that it gives us; unsearchable by others, deceitful with reference to ourselves, and abominably wicked, so that neither can a man know his own heart, nor can any other know that of his neighbour's

I know slightly off topic - but this verse is one of the many reasons we began homeschooling our children. We realised that we were giving them no choice but to get counsel from ungodly (they were at a state school) for many hours each day.

Counsel is so important - I wish I was taught to seek it when I was younger. You're doing a great job with your beautiful family!

What does the Bible mean when it says, "I will hide thy Word in my heart that I might not sin against Thee."? It seems the way to train children to walk in God's truth is through Scripture. It seems "godly counsel" is different than your ordinary advice. Godly counsel speaks biblical truth into a situation. Advice is just someone's opinion. I, too, don't trust my heart (emotions). But combining my Bible reading with prayer time with godly counsel (which is really just scriptural insight from another person)- then I know which way to proceed and "peace that passes understanding floods my heart and mind". That type of peace goes beyond an emotional (heart) response - it's in your spirit. To not walk in that way would be sin. To continue to seek out counsel once my spirit has been led by God would be sin (He who knows what He ought to do but does not do it to him it is sin.) I seek daily to teach God's truth to my children so that they know which way to go. (In Him we have been given everything we need for life and godliness.) Blessings, Jennifer
